Overview

The Khaptad National Park spreads over the trans-Himalayan and the Mahabharata region of Sudurpaschim (far western) region of Nepal and covers an area of 225 sq km. The Park is named after Khaptad Swami, a renowned scholar and hermit who lived here for almost five decades in the mid-1900s. The Festival takes place every autumn in the park which has a small lake known as Khaptad Daha on the northeastern side.


Several historical temples surround this area and the Ganga Dashhara celebration is held annually here every full moon in May. Sahara Linga at 3,200 meters is the highest point of the park. Other religious areas in the park include Ganesh Temple, Nagdhunga and Kedardhunga.

 
The park is covered with a forest of Chir pine at a lower altitude, and sub-alpine forests of fir, hemlock, oak and rhododendron in the higher areas. The area boasts of 224 species of medicinal herbs and is described as the living garden of herbs
 

You get Spectacular views of Mt Api and Mt Saipal and other mountains of the Indian Himalaya. A  mirror-like reflection of the forest and mountains is seen in the pristine waters of the Khaptad lake.


The Khaptad Park is habitat to leopard, Himalayan yellow-throated marten, Himalayan black bear, jackal, musk deer, goral, Himalayan tahr, wolf and bird species include the danphe, Nepal's national bird, chukar partridge, Kalij, Monal, red and yellow-billed blue magpie, nutcracker, flycatchers, thrushes (Garrulax spp. & Zoothera spp.), Himalayan griffin, cuckoos, forktails, tits wagtails, and eagles. A wide variety of colorful butterflies, moths and insects are also important features of the Khaptad ecosystem.

During summer (June – September) the temperature ranges from 0-20 degrees Celsius. While, in winters (December – February) the temperature is usually bellowed 20 degrees Celsius. The best time to visit the park is in autumn (October – November) and spring (March-May).
 
Shuklaphanta National Park is 104 km away from Khaptad national park. Sukhlaphanta National park is situated at the southwestern corner of Nepal in Kanchanpur District of Far-West State (State 7). The altitude ranges from 175 – 1300 m above sea level. It lies at the middle of the transboundary Terai Arc Landscape which spreads between Bagmati River in the East and Yamuna in the West.

 

Shuklaphanta National Park is a protected area in the Terai of the Far-Western Region, Nepal, covering 305 km2 (118 sq m) of open grassland, forests, riverbeds and tropical wetlands at an altitude of 174 to 1,386 m (571 to 4,547 ft).

 

The area was a favorite hunting ground for Nepal's ruling class and was declared a Royal Hunting Reserve in 1969. In 1973, the area was gazetted as Royal Sukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve, initially comprising 155 km2 (60 sq m), and extended to its present size in the late 1980s. In 2017, the status of the protected area was changed to a national park. 

 

The name Suklaphanta means grasslands that are found inside the protected area. This grassland is the largest patch of continuous grassland in Nepal covering an area of about 16 sq km.

 

The Park is a habitat for Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, sloth bear, swamp deer, elephant, hispid hare and great one-horned rhinoceros which was translocated from Chitwan National Park. 

 

It has the highest population of Bengal floricans in Nepal. Swamp francolin, Jerdon's bush chat, rufous-rumpled grass bird, chestnut-capped babbler and babbler, Finn’s weaver, Hodgson's bush chat, spot-bellied eagle owl, dusky eagle owl, Rufous-bellied eagle and Oriental pied hornbill, great slaty woodpecker and white-napped woodpecker are some of the birds that are found in this park. 700 species of flora are estimated in the park including 553 vascular plants, 18 Pteridophytes, 410 dicots and 125 monocots.


The climate of the region is subtropical monsoonal with a mean annual rainfall of 1,579 mm (62.2 in) that occurs from June to September and is highest in August. The winter months of December and January are fairly cold with daytime temperatures of 7–12 °C (45–54 °F) and occasional frost. From February onwards temperatures rise to 25 °C (77 °F) in March and reach 42 °C (108 °F) by end of April. When the first pre-monsoon rains reach the area in May, humidity increases.

Day 1 - Kathmandu- Dhangadhi- Jhigrana (2300M)
  • Dhangadi to Dipayal

    We take a connecting flight from Dhangadi and Reach Dipayal Silghadi Airport.

  • Dipayal to Jhigrana

    Once we arrive, at Dipayal Airport and drive to Jhigrana on the way we will visit saileswori temple and Lunch at Silghadibazar.

    Upon reaching our destination, we take a rest. We have our dinner and spend the night at a Homestay.

  • Fly from Kathmandu to Dhangadi

    We meet at Kathmandu Domestic Terminal and Fly from Buddha Air flight to Dhangadi.


Day 2 - Jhigrana - Beechpani- Khaptad Triveni (3010M)
  • Breakfast

    Breakfast and start trek to Khaptad, this is 8 HrsPlus trek on this day Jingrana—Khaptad National Park (Bichpani).

    The route from Jhigrana to Beechpani (approximately 4 hours journey) is tough, high and steep.

  • Reach Khaptad from Beechpani

    The trek on this day leads on the trail through the subtropical forest of pine, continues with the subalpine forest of fir, hemlock, oak and rhododendron in the higher area. The meadows are covered with colourful flowers.

  • Dinner

    The further path goes on the stoned path through grasslands and pasture and arrives at the camping site at Khapad. Dinner and Overnight stay at Tented Camp.


Day 3 - Khaptad National Park

    On this Day, we relish the beauty of this mystical region and spend time amidst the healing nature, Dinner and overnight at a tented camp.

    We travel around Khaptad National Park (view tower, Khaptad Baba Ashram, KhaptadDaha (lake), Nagdhunga.

    The beauty of lush green meadows, lakes and wildlife at Khaptad National Park (1,400 meters to 3,300 meters) is rejuvenating. We will feel the pleasing effects of this exquisite and alluring landscape once we reach the site.

  • Morning recreation at Khaptad

    We rise up and early and begin the day with yoga and meditation. Followed by breakfast, we continue exploring the National Park.


Day 4 - Khaptad - Jhigrana- Pipalla Bazaar- Dipayal

    Breakfast and return back to Jhigrana in the same way.

  • Dipayal to Dhangadi

    Bhageswor and Salmuni for Darshan and then We will take a flight to Dhangadi from Dipayal Silghadi.

Day 5 - Dhangadhi- Suklaphanta
  • Breakfast

    Breakfast at the hotel & drive to Suklaphanta.

  • Mahendranagar

    After breakfast drive towards Mahendranagar, visit dodhara chandani bridge.

  • Rana tharu Home Stay

    We will get to know rana tharu culture and free time around the place on your Own.

    Dinner with Rana Tharu cultural show at evening.


Day 6 - Suklaphanta-Dhangadhi-Kathmandu
  • Breakfast

    We begin the day early at 6:30, have a fulfilling breakfast and depart from the homestay at 7:30.

    we go for a jeep drive inside Suklaphanta National Park. Here, we will get the opportunity to get glimpses of diverse species of rare wildlife including Tiger, Rhino, Wild Boar, birds and herd of Swamp Deer.

    Approximately five hours of recreation at the Park and we go for lunch.

  • Dhangadhi

    We then head to Dhangadhi. We fly from Dhangadhi via Buddha Air flight number U4254 at 17:00 pm and land in Kathmandu at 1805 pm.

Cancellation Policy

The following cancellation policies are applicable under the following scenarios: 

1. If cancelled by the Company:

 

The company reserves the right to cancel a tour in any circumstances. The company will not cancel a tour less than 30 days before the start date of the tour except for force majeure or failure on the client’s part to make all due payments or if the client fails to comply with any requirements of the booking conditions. 

 

If the Company has to cancel, you will be informed as soon as possible. 

 

If there is time to do so before departure and the cancellation does not result from your failure, then the Company will offer you a choice to purchase an alternative tour as a result of consolidation or another available tour offered by the company. In either case, paying or receiving a refund in respect of difference in price or receiving a full refund of all monies paid to the Company. 

It is advisable to only book fully flexible transport and other arrangements which can be cancelled or changed without charges, as the Company is not liable to pay the Client any cancellation, amendment or other changes the Client may need to make as a result of the cancellation of the tour. 

As a minimum, the Company, where compensation is due will pay a compensation of USD 100 per confirmed passenger. The Company is not liable for compensation if the booking is cancelled as a result of force majeure. 

 

2. If Cancelled by the Clients 

 

Clients have the option to cancel their booking as per the following policies of the Company: 

  • 10% of the advanced payment will be retained by the Company if cancellation is done 30 days prior to the start date of the tour. 
  • 50% of the advanced payment will be retained by the Company if cancellation is done 2 to 3 days prior to the start date of the tour. 
  • 100% of the advanced payment is retained by the Company is the cancellation is done less than 2 days before the start of the tour date. 

 

In case of non-payment of the remaining balance before the due date, the Company reserves the right to treat your booking as cancelled and 100% of the advanced payment will be retained as a cancellation charge by the Company.
